• Proud


In the world of Brand New Animal, there are two types of people: humans and beastmen. Beastmen face discrimination from humans, and while many beastmen live in hiding amongst humans, the vast majority live within the beastman exclusion area known as Anima City. In spite of this treatment, Shirou, a wolf beastman, is incredibly proud to have been born as one. In the first episode, he could be seen both in his Ginrou and normal beastman forms enjoying the festival that is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Anima City. As Ginrou, he can be seen howling in celebration, whereas as a normal beastman he can be seen crying in joy.

This pride also extends into an extreme dislike and distrust of humans. Anima City was not the first city to have existed. Over a thousand years ago, a city by the name of Nirvasyl existed for beastmen in Eastern Europe. Shirou lived in this city and witnessed its destruction at the hands of humans, for what he could see for no reason. This hatred of humans even applies to beastmen who damage Anima City on behalf of humans. During fights with a deer and rhino beastman who value their own interests over the interests of fellow beastmen, Shirou states since they have abandoned their pride as beastmen, they don’t need their pride as a deer or rhino before breaking off their antlers and horn respectively. In fact, were he not stopped, Shirou would have likely killed some of these beastmen during these fights.

• Gruff


Overall, Shirou Oogami is a gruff, stoic, and quiet individual He starts off as incredibly closed off, keeping much about himself private. He is initially hostile to Michiru Kagemori, a teenage human girl who is turned into a tanuki beastman, criticising her for her youthful naivety and stating that she wouldn’t understand his feelings because she wasn’t a beastman. After getting confirmation that she used to be human, he even attempts to barricade her within her room at the Beastman Co-Op.


• Helpful


He cares a lot for his fellow beastmen and will do anything to help them. He will do whatever he considers to be in the best interests of beastmen, whether it’s playing the live broadcast of a baseball game for their coach who has been attempting to throw their games all season or working with a beastman mafia to protect the beastmen of Anima City. Originally driven by vengeance, Shirou learns that that road does not fill his life and that to truly protect beastmen, he needs to be able to show mercy. At the end of the series, Shirou is able to look to the future with hope that things will be better for the beastmen.


• Recovering


Shirou has spent a good majority of his life living in search of vengeance. Following the destruction of Nirvasyl and his turn into Ginrou, Shirou spent time searching out the human general responsible for killing his fellow beastmen. However, after slaughtering many members of the army, he found an emptiness in mindless vengeance and decided to devote himself to being a protector of beastmen. As Ginrou, he protected beastmen around the world and even led them to new lands, creating the legend of the Silver Wolf god. Eventually, while rescuing Barbara Rose from a concentration camp at the end of World War II, after seeing the cruel experiments performed on the beastmen, he slaughtered every human in the lab and stayed out of his Ginrou form for several decades, until he was forced into it to survive a fight against a rhino beastman who contracted Nirvasyl Syndrome. Shirou feels an immense amount of guilt for the beastmen he could not save. This can be especially seen when Nazuna’s live concert is used to trigger Nirvasyl Syndrome among the beastmen of Anima City. Seeing the beastman become corrupted with the Nirvasyl Syndrome brings back terrible memories of seeing Nirvasyl over a thousand years ago. These memories, overlaid by the repeat of the events in front of him, cause Shirou himself to succumb to Nirvasyl Syndrome as well.

Shirou’s friendship with Michiru causes him to change over time. However, he comes to realize that Michiru does have good intentions for her actions. He opens up, becoming more friendly and starts to place trust in her. It is because of his relationship with Michiru that Shirou learns that is better to show mercy than kill in revenge. When given the chance to kill Alan Sylvasta in revenge for what his family did in Nirvasyl and for triggering Nirvasyl Syndrome in Anima City, he instead chooses to force his blood into Alan’s body, putting the antidote for Nirvasyl Syndrome into him that he got from Michiru’s blood.


Under pressure:

Shirou reacts incredibly well under pressure, for the most part. He's quick to jump into dangerous situations in order to help the people who need his help. He thinks about his safety second, as he's functionally immortal, and doesn't mind the injuries he takes in order to protect others. At the start of the series, he is essentially a lone wolf, doing things on his own and stating that he doesn't need help, but grows to accept help from others who offer it.

Upon arrival to Noctium, Shirou is going to take time to examine the city and his surroundings. It would be the first time he's arrived somewhere without his planning and he would want to take the time to learn as much as he can about the situation. Having lived in Anima City during an essential refugee crisis, he will be understanding of the steps the city is taking, but also very much aware of what goes on from the other side and will be judging the steps Noctium takes. He's at a point where he is recovering from the trauma that he's lived through and will be more open, however that will likely not extend to the intimacy he's required to to do in order to generate Manna. He'll be hesitant to do so, and while he won't allow himself to fall into a Chrysalis state, he will get bad enough to nerf his powers to the point he'll revert back to his wolf form.

Condition upon arrival: Healthy

Abilities:

As a Beastman, Shirou’s natural form is that of an anthropormorphic wolf, but is able to change his physical appearance to that of a normal human. He is able to change his appearance at will, with no known requirements. However, in order to use the majority of his powers listed below, Shirou needs to be in his natural, wolf form.

Due to a ritual that Shirou unknowingly took part in, he has become a Transcended Beastman, which has granted him with a variety of godlike abilities.

Ginrou: In addition to his normal beastman and human forms, Shirou has an additional form that for ease of reference I’ll call “Ginrou”. While in Ginrou, Shirou’s form looks more like a regular wolf. However, he is much larger, emits a supernatural light-blue light, and has protruding wings from his front shoulders. While in this form, he not only has access to the powers listed below, but also gains additional powers. As Ginrou, Shirou can turn the wings on his shoulders into blades which can be used to cut through people and he can turn his howl into a laser beam.

Furthermore, his howl inspires all other beastmen to howl with him.

NERFS: As Ginrou, Shirou will not be able to fire his laser beam without causing considerable strain to himself. He will be incredibly tired afterwards. Furthermore, he will have the additional nerfs listed below.

If people in Noctium want to awoo with him, they are more than welcome to.

Tracking: Shirou has an incredibly keen sense of smell. His sense of smell even allows him to see the past movements of individuals, seeing how they interacted with the object he’s using to track. However, he has issues tracking individuals who travel through the sky, as their scents dissipate by the time he attempts to track them.

NERFS: He will no longer be able to see how individuals handled objects. He will just be able to track who handled the object and where they’ve been

Longevity/Healing: As a result of the ritual, Shirou has gained functional immortality. He has lived since the destruction of Nirvasyl, while looking the same age as he did when the attack begame. He recovers quickly from injuries, both life-threatening and not. He has been show to expel bullets from his body and fix a broken arm in an instant. Shirou has even survived being gored by a horn through the center of his chest. However, it is important to note that the more serious injuries do take some time for him to heal from.

NERFS: Shirou’s healing will take longer. If he could instantly fix his broken arm, it will take closer to a minute, for example.

Resilience: Not only does Shirou have enhanced healing, he has enhanced resilience. He is able to survive a fall from several hundred feet, impact on the ground, and be able to get up and walk away with minimal injuries.

Speed and Strength: In both is wolf beastman and Ginrou form, Shirou is capable of supernatural speed and strength. He can dodge bullets and move to deal devastating blows to his opponents. He can move at speeds capable of saving someone from a falling billboard and can use his strength to break off a rhino’s horns and a deer’s antlers with his bare hands.

NERFS: Shirou’s speed will be hindered so that dodging bullets could still be possible, but much more effort would be required, making it more of a 50/50 chance. The same will be said for his strength.
